Using the basic models

Power Apps has a small number of basic AI models, with associated controls, already built into the app studio. Since they are baked in, they are ready for you to drop straight onto your canvas to start using without having to go through any bespoke customization or creation of an AI model.

The models immediately available to you are the following:

  • Business card reader
  • Receipt processor
  • Text recognizer

Let’s focus on one of my personal favorite models, the receipt processor. This has featured in several solutions that I’ve built around the collection of expense receipts, where a picture of the receipt can be taken and the model will extract key information such as the date of purchase, the total amount, the line items, and even the tax amount.

All the models can be found from the Insert menu under the AI Builder heading:
