To get the most out of this book

The reader should have a general knowledge of C and C++ and be capable of writing, compiling, and executing C and C++ applications on Linux. In order to execute the examples in this book, the reader should also have access to an Intel-based computer running Ubuntu Linux 17.10 or higher. The reader should also ensure that GCC 7.0 or higher is installed using the following:

sudo apt-get install build-essential

Conventions used

There are a number of text conventions used throughout this book.

CodeInText: Indicates code words in text, database table names, folder names, filenames, file extensions, pathnames, dummy URLs, user input, and Twitter handles. Here is an example: "For example, look at the difference between using an std::array{} or a std::vector{} command."

A block of code is set as follows:

int array[10];

auto r1 = array + 1;
auto r2 = *(array + 1);
auto r3 = array[1];

When we wish to draw your attention to a particular part of a code block, the relevant lines or items are set in bold:

{
auto ptr1 = mmap_unique_server<int>(42);
auto ptr2 = mmap_unique_client<int>();
std::cout << *ptr1 << '\n';
std::cout << *ptr2 << '\n';
}

Any command-line input or output is written as follows:

> cmake -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release ..
> make

Bold: Indicates a new term, an important word, or words that you see on screen. For example, words in menus or dialog boxes appear in the text like this. Here is an example: "Select System info from the Administration panel."
