A CoE for cloud cost management becomes a necessity when an organization spends a good amount of money on the cloud. During economically uncertain times, when cost-cutting measures are implemented across the organization, the cloud is the first target.
To appropriately handle financial challenges, a structured and centralized organization is the desire of leadership. The skills needed to build the FinOps teams are still very scarce, and experienced analysts are hard to find.
It is recommended to at least hire an experienced person who has implemented cost savings measures to jump-start the journey. The cloud cost management field is huge and requires specific cloud service provider knowledge. Once the FinOps lead is hired, you can immediately plan an upskilling program for one or two other employees who may be interested in this field.
