General points regarding SPSS transformation commands

We are going to discuss a few pointers of the tranform commands from the discussion so far:

  • Any of the basic transformation commands (RECODE, COMPUTE, COUNT, and IF) can be included within a DO IF structure. Statistical procedures and special purpose procedures such as AUTORECODE and OPTIMAL BINNING cannot be put inside a DO IF structure.
  • Transformation commands, unlike statistical procedures, are not executed immediately. If you create a command such as RECODE or COMPUTE using a dialog box, an EXECUTE command is included automatically, so the command gets processed. If you create a COMPUTE command in syntax and run the command, a Tranformations pending message appears at the bottom of each SPSS window you have open.
