vSphere HA can be configured to monitor virtual machines so that unresponsive VMs can be restarted (reset). This can be achieved by enabling VM Monitoring on the HA cluster. HA can further monitor the applications running inside the VM if application monitoring is enabled. However, this would mean that the application should be coded to use the necessary APIs. VM Monitoring is very handy when you have VMs hosting services for which you can't afford longer downtime.
