Moving up a level
As is the case for any role, the particulars of how to move from one level to the next will vary from company to company. That being said, there are some general guidelines and tips that will help you make the leap. These are:
- Know your company’s process.
- Talk with your manager.
- Document your body of work.
- Have a mentor.
- Write out a plan.
Know your company’s process for moving up a level. Some companies are merit-based, meaning that once you have met certain criteria, your manager promotes you. This is not very common in the tech industry, which instead relies on proving oneself through their body of work and recommendations from colleagues. In either case, you need to understand what is expected of you as well as your manager.
