In the previous chapter, we discussed how to incorporate redundancy and high availability into our networks by implementing server load balancing and a firewall failover group. One problem that we did not address, however, was how to ensure redundancy and high availability in our connection to the public internet. Businesses that want to ensure that access to the internet is always available will want to eliminate single points of failure. We do this through a multi-WAN setup, which is the main topic of this chapter. Fortunately, pfSense makes it easy to implement such a setup.
In this chapter, we will cover the following:
- The basic concepts of multi-WAN
- Setting up multiple WANs for load balancing/failover
- An example multi-WAN setup
- Troubleshooting
