Extending AWS Lambda with External Services

In the previous chapter, we learned how to leverage and execute few Lambda functions based on triggers. However, one key aspect of that chapter was that the events were generated by sources or services residing within AWS. But, what if the triggers are generated by an external service provider or a third-party tool? Is Lambda even capable of handling such external services and events?
