Getting Started with ResearchKit

Chapter 2. ResearchKit Hello World

In this chapter, we will be creating a simple Hello World app using ResearchKit. During this process, you will learn how to integrate ResearchKit in an Xcode project and set up data protection. The second part of the chapter will introduce you to the Softwareitis app, which we will be building throughout this book as we study the various aspects of ResearchKit.

Hello World App

Let's get started on building the Hello World app.

Create project

Following are the steps to create simple Xcode application:

  1. Firstly, note that we will be using Xcode 7 and Swift 2.0 throughout this book and then open Xcode:
    Create project
  2. Create a new HelloWorldRK project as shown in the following image:
    Create project

Checkout ResearchKit from GitHub

Open the terminal app and cd in the HelloWorldRK folder, where the HelloWorldRK.xcodeproj file is located. Type the following command to check ResearchKit from the GitHub repository:

git clone https://github.com/ResearchKit/ResearchKit.git ResearchKit

Tip

In case you are using Git for version control of your project, it is recommended to check ResearchKit as a Git submodule. You can use the following command. You can learn more about Git submodules at https://git-scm.com/book/en/v2/Git-Tools-Submodules:

git submodule add https://github.com/ResearchKit/ResearchKit.git ResearchKit

Import ResearchKit

Open the ResearchKit folder in Finder, drag and drop ResearchKit...

Introducing Softwareitis

In order to keep it fun and light, we will be developing a clinical research app for a fictitious disease called Softwareitis. This disease is characterized by the constant need to download and try new apps in the smartphone. Throughout this book, we will be building the Softwareitis research app to demonstrate various aspects of ResearchKit.

You can find the Softwareitis.xcodeproj Xcode project in the Chapter_2/Softwareitis folder of the RKBook GitHub repository. Open it in Xcode and make yourself familiar with this simple app, especially the TableViewController.swift file.

As you can see, the app has just one table view controller with each row of the table view representing a Softwareitis task that a user needs to perform. Currently, it has a demo task, Hello World, which we created in the HelloWorldRK app. Throughout the book, we will be adding new tasks by adding methods to the TableViewController Softwareitis Tasks extension and adding entries to rows in the...

Summary

In this chapter, you learned how to create the Hello World ResearchKit app. You were also introduced to the Softwareitis project, which we will be building for rest of the book.

In the next chapter, let's take a look at creating Surveys at depth and Introduction to the Basic RK object model: ORKTask, ORKTaskViewController, and ORKResult.

Key benefits

  • Create a simple clinical research app using most aspects of ResearchKit
  • Build a simple survey with various data types with the results printed on the screen.
  • A step-by-step guide introducing Apple's ResearchKit and techniques to incorporate it into various apps.

Description

ResearchKit is an open source software development framework from Apple that lets you easily create mobile applications for clinical research studies. ResearchKit provides you the ability to orchestrate the administration of tasks and recording of the results. ResearchKit provides tasks in order to perform informed consent, active tasks, and surveys. Starting with the basics of the ResearchKit framework, this books walks you through the steps of creating iOS applications that could serve as the basis of a clinical research mobile app. This book will introduce readers to ResearchKit and how to turn your iPhone into into a clinical research tool. The book will start off by installing and building the research framework in line with the researcher's needs; during this, the reader will learn to embed ResearchKit in the application and create a small task. After this, the book will go a little deeper into creating modules for surveys, consents, and so on. The book will also cover the various aspects of privacy and security with regard to participant data, and how to build dashboards for visualizing medical data and results in line with the researcher's requirements: data backends, JSON serialization and deserialization, and so on. Readers will be able to fully utilize ResearchKit for medical research, will be able to get more and more patients to participate in their surveys, and will gain insights from the surveys using the dashboards created.

Who is this book for?

This book is aimed at medical researchers with basic iOS coding knowledge and iOS developers looking to create clinical research apps.

What you will learn

  • Learn to create customized consent form
  • Get introduced to two backend services: a simple backend server using Sinatra and Sage Bridge
  • Build a custom task (a conditional survey example) and a navigable task
  • Get an Overview of ResearchKit s open source repository and App Core
  • Interaction with the hardware of the device including the gyro and the motion sensors
  • Learn the basics of this revolutionary technology
  • Get introduced to the barebones app and learn to write your first code

Projects are rarely cancelled, but sometimes it's unavoidable. If an Early Access course is cancelled or excessively delayed, you can exchange your purchase for another course. For further details, please contact us here.

Where can I send feedback about an Early Access title? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

If you have any feedback about the product you're reading, or Early Access in general, then please fill out a contact form here and we'll make sure the feedback gets to the right team.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. The new chapters are automatically added to your account, so you can also check back there any time you're ready and download or read them online.

I am a Packt subscriber, do I get Early Access? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

How do I buy Early Access content? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Early Access is a way of us getting our content to you quicker, but the method of buying the Early Access course is still the same. Just find the course you want to buy, go through the check-out steps, and you’ll get a confirmation email from us with information and a link to the relevant Early Access courses.

What is Early Access? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Keeping up to date with the latest technology is difficult; new versions, new frameworks, new techniques. This feature gives you a head-start to our content, as it's being created. With Early Access you'll receive each chapter as it's written, and get regular updates throughout the product's development, as well as the final course as soon as it's ready. We created Early Access as a means of giving you the information you need, as soon as it's available. As we go through the process of developing a course, 99% of it can be ready but we can't publish until that last 1% falls in to place. Early Access helps to unlock the potential of our content early, to help you start your learning when you need it most. You not only get access to every chapter as it's delivered, edited, and updated, but you'll also get the finalized, DRM-free product to download in any format you want when it's published. As a member of Packt, you'll also be eligible for our exclusive offers, including a free course every day, and discounts on new and popular titles.
