Improving Cost Visibility with Dashboards and Reports
Understanding our cloud costs comes before any cost-saving initiative. To understand our costs, we must comprehend the key cost drivers that shift costs up and down and how the costs are distributed across different services present in our cloud environments.
Dashboards and reports are key assets that we can use to ease this process, and let us check the current status and track the development and implementation of FinOps initiatives. The purpose of this chapter is to learn how to use the built-in dashboards and reports available from our cloud providers, as well as how to create our own, and understand the information that we can select and highlight to increase cost visibility and optimization.
To be able to work on reports and dashboards, we will also cover the financial basics required for this exercise, such as calculating trends and understanding financial key concepts that can help us throughout FinOps practices.
