There is a rule in selling that, "People buy from people who they know, like, and trust." The ability to get along with people to this degree in any work situation develops because of a learned set of social skills.
In Chapter 7, Do You Have an Axe to Grind? Use a Positive Approach for Workplace Conflict, I mentioned four skill areas that make up Emotional Intelligence:
Two personal competencies are of the intrapersonal nature: self-awareness and self-management.
Two social competencies or interpersonal skills: social awareness and relationship management.
