Modeling a decorative tray using radial array

For this exercise, let’s model the round decorative tray in Figure 8.33. In the process, we will do a radial array, which arranges items in a circle, equally spaced.

We will start by creating the two-dimensional (2D) framework.

Creating the tray’s 2D framework

Open a new SketchUp file, choose the Architectural Inches template, and delete the scale figure. Get into Top view using the Views toolbar or under Camera | Standard Views | Top:

Draw an 18" diameter circle: Activate the Circle tool (shortcut C), click and release your mouse anywhere, type 9, and press Enter. Group it.

How to adjust the number of edges for a circle

By default, a circle in SketchUp consists of 24 edges. The greater the number of edges a circle has, the smoother its appearance will be. You can adjust the number of sides a circle has by typing a value into the Measurements...
