You have learned about two approaches to realize the solution architecture from Chapter 4, Classification of Services: best of breed or comprehensive suites. Both have advantages and disadvantages. Components from the solution architecture can interact with each other using standards. Using a component you built in the environment of one vendor is not so easy; this is not supported for most components. Therefore, it is important to think about the choice in advance. To show you what a suite can offer, the different products to realize and support SOA from three major software vendors—: Oracle, IBM, and Microsoft— were discussed. Oracle and IBM offer solutions for SOA and BPM that are composed of different acquired products and are integrating their products into comprehensive suites. Microsoft takes a more programmatic approach; they offer tooling that allows system integrators to build products for specific industries.
