Summary

The creation of realms and setting up of proxying comes as a natural progression for any FreeRADIUS deployment that has to integrate into a larger network of RADIUS servers. Let's take a look at the important points from this chapter to remember:

  • Realms are defined in the proxy.conf file and used to determine if a request has to be forwarded to an external home server.
  • LOCAL, NULL, and DEFAULT are special realms. LOCAL always exists and is used to cancel proxying. NULL is used to group usernames without a realm and DEFAULT is used to group usernames from unknown realms.
  • For an external home server to receive forwarded requests the server proxying the request has to be defined as a client on the home server.
  • Realms defined with the nostrip option will cause the suffix module not to add the Stripped-User-Name AVP to the request. The nostrip option is usually chosen when forwarding requests to an external home server.
