Building Applications with Spring 5 and Vue.js 2

Vue.js 2 - It Works in the Way You Expected

Vue.js is simple and powerful, and it is easy to learn. Once you understand the basics of the framework, everything will work in just the way you expect. The framework will help you to keep focused on writing the logic of your application instead of remembering a bunch of APIs that are hard to use.

In this chapter, you will do the following:

  • Learn fundamental concepts in Vue.js
  • Learn how the Vue.js reactivity system works
  • Learn about the internal implementation of Vue.js
  • Learn about Vue.js logic and designs

Along the way, we will create a sample application. It will show you how Vue.js works and you can write the application step by step as you read. And, by the end of this chapter, you will have a single-page application (SPA) that demonstrates most of the features in Vue.js 2, and you will have a deep understanding of how Vue.js...

Fundamental concepts

When you start a Vue application, what you need to keep in mind is your application's logic itself. You don't need to remember a set of APIs so that you can connect different pieces of your code. Vue.js, which is a progressive framework, provides you with an intuitive way of writing web applications, starting small and growing incrementally into a large-scale application. If you have used other frameworks before, you may wonder why they make things unnecessarily complicated. Now, let's go through fundamental concepts in Vue.js and create the sample application.

Vue instance

Creating a Vue instance is the start of every Vue.js application. Typically, a Vue application consists of two...

Behind the scene

By now, we have covered most of the concepts in Vue.js. Those that we haven't talked about will be discussed when we build the TaskAgile application. For now, let's see what is behind the scene and how Vue.js makes the magic happen.

Reactivity system

The simplicity and powerfulness of Vue.js originate from its reactive data binding system. It is designed to be intuitive, and it doesn't require your attention to keep the data and the view in sync.

Essentially, to archive this ubiquitous reactivity, internally, Vue.js implements a variant of the observer design pattern to collect dependencies of the data and notify watchers when data is changed. During the initialization of a Vue instance...

Summary

In this chapter, you learned about Vue instances and their life cycles. You created Vue components and created directives, filters, mixins, and plugins for the Messages App. You also took a deep dive into the internal implementation of Vue to understand its reactivity system.

We haven't covered slots, transitions, and animations in Vue.js. We will talk about them later when we build the TaskAgile application, along with two other core librariesVue Router and Vuex.

In the next chapter, we will move on to Spring 5, the backend technology that we will use to build the application. And we will also talk about the skillsets that a full-stack developer should have besides frontend and backend technologies.
