Start with the basics – shipping carriers and carrier groups
Before jumping to forms and configuration, let’s define a carrier. A shipping carrier is a company that transports goods on behalf of another company and charges by that service. For example, if we need to transport goods from point A to point B, we can ask a shipping carrier to move them for us, and they will charge for that service. We can also have our shipping fleet and do our shipping service internally, but this depends on the company.
Most companies have a fleet to transport goods and shipping carriers for specific routes or to handle emergency issues, such as broken-down trucks or fleet maintenance problems. To handle both scenarios, we can start by creating rate masters and rating profiles.
Rate masters and rating profile
We must set up a rating profile to define a carrier in the system. This functionality allows us to determine the shipping rates and compare carriers’ rates.
