SQL Server is a relational database management system developed by Microsoft. What is custom duty/charge?

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order?

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges?

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.

How can I cancel my order?

Cancellation Policy for Published Printed Books:

You can cancel any order within 1 hour of placing the order. Simply contact customercare@packt.com with your order details or payment transaction id. If your order has already started the shipment process, we will do our best to stop it. However, if it is already on the way to you then when you receive it, you can contact us at customercare@packt.com using the returns and refund process.

tl;dr - I highly recommend this book.If you are like me and still prefer the physical book as your primary reading material, Benjamin Nevarez's book from Packt Publishing is a great book to add to your bookshelf. I have reviewed the last two editions of Benjamin's other book on "High-Performance SQL Server". And just like how I recommended those to friends, I highly recommend SQL Server Query Tuning and Optimization: Optimize SQL Server 2022 Queries and Applications.As the book title indicates, you don't expect to see all the new features introduced in SQL Server 2022 here (e.g, Ledger, Azure Synapse Link for SQL, etc). If you are looking for a great resource for SQL Server query tuning and optimization, this is your book. And if you are not planning to implement SQL Server 2022 in the near future, need not worry because it also covers older versions.It is just proper that the book starts with Introduction to Query Tuning and Optimization in Chapter 1, which covers how the query optimizer works and how it produces efficient execution plans. The first chapter takes you from the fundamental of query tuning to the basics of an execution plan.I like the cadence of this book. It's kinda fast-paced when it comes to the progression of discussion. By Chapter 2, you are lunging at Dynamic Management Views (DMVs) and Dynamic Management Functions (DMFs), SQL Trace, Extended Events, and Data Collector.Chapters 3 to 5 cover the Query Optimizer, Execution Engine, and Working with Indexes.Chapter 6 covers Statistics which includes a section about the "new" Cardinality Estimator introduced in SQL Server 2014 and a little background on estimation models.Chapter 7 covers In-Memory OLTP.Chapters 8 to 10 cover Understanding Plan Caching, Query Store, and Intelligent Query Processing.Chapter 11 covers an Introduction to Datawarehouse and the common performance problems and how to solve them.I understand why the author decided to place the chapter on Query Hints at the end of the book, Chapter 12. Do you need Hints? Probably not. Do you always "not need" Hints? Probably not, either. There are instances where Hints are "necessary" depending on your needs. This chapter covers some of those scenarios.

It gives a comprehensive and indepth explanation on Query Tuning and Optimization.This book covers more than just Tuning and Optimization, it show you how to Work with Indexes, Understanding Statistics, Data warehousing e.t.c.The pages should not at all intimidate any reader because every page is loaded with rich information that you as a developer will eventually use at some point. It includes diagrams which show step by step explanations which makes it an easy read.Grab yourself a copy it is worth it.

This book is fantastic for SQL Server developers and SQL Server database administrators to learn and know the inner workings of the query optimizer in SQL Server and gain skills to write better queries to be better optimized by the database engine, all with examples and explained in detail, which will allow us to build much more efficient solutions. Best of all, this book is already updated to the version of SQL Server 2022 that will be released very soon by Microsoft.In this book are covered interesting topics such Troubleshooting Queries, The Query Optimizer, The Execution Engine, Working with Indexes, Understanding Statistics, In-Memory OLTP, Understanding Plan Caching, The Query Store, Intelligent Query Processing, columnstore indexes, among others.I had the opportunity to meet the Author Benjamin in person and share with him in Seattle at several SQL PASS Summits and I can say that he is a great professional, an expert in SQL Server and above all a great person and his passion for SQL Server and experience It is reflected in this book.

Here are a few of my summarized thoughts on the book.Thorough - twelve chapters, and almost 450 pp.Modern - includes discussion of the features like the Query Store, and updates to SQL Server 2022 features (Intelligent Query Processing additions).Code samples – lots of them, and nice that the code used in the book was downloadable from GitHub.Surprised - I was surprised about the recommendation to use the DTA (Database Tuning Advisor). I didn’t think many people took that seriously. I was even more surprised at the recommendation to use the “Data Collector”; I didn’t know that feature was taken seriously and I’ve heard of a number of objections about it.At least one new thing learned – I didn’t know XML Plans have a published schema (p. 39). These schemas were under my nose all these years but I wasn’t aware.Lots of pictures, including pictures of index trees.Thorough treatment of statistics. Examples of Trace Flags.Very thorough description of In-Memory OLTP, including the history of updates to the feature set.I liked the added topics on data warehousing and query hints.

It can show you behind the scenes; the why of how things work the database engine.
