This book is broken into two distinct parts. The first part it is a general introduction to the important parts of BizTalk Server 2010: understanding what is BizTalk, when to use it and its capabilities, appropriate topologies for different scenarios (architecture, scalability, availability) and an introduction to the fundaments parts of the platform like BAM, Business Rules and BizTalk artifacts (orchestrations, pipelines, maps, schemas). This part is mainly theory with lot of core patterns. The second part is written in a form of history, love this part, telling how he began to implement BizTalk integrations on a particular customer, start for the basic scenario (Pass thru) to more robust and complex scenarios. This second part the shifts from theory to practice presenting real world integration patterns explained step-by-step (BAM and Unit Tests, messaging solutions, error handling, BRE, orchestration patterns like convoys ...)It is a great book and highly recommended. Congratulations to the author: Dan Rosanova (two time MVP BizTalk Server).

Combining theory and practicality with ease is not easy at all. But this book does just that. Summarizing in one word it should be said that this book imparts inspiration.

This book completely lacks the cookie-cutter feel of most technical books. I'd spent a couple of months working on getting a fairly large BizTalk installation designed and laid out based on a couple of other books and the available Microsoft documentation, but was constantly stymied by the lack of purpose to anything I'd read. I'd learned what all the components were, what the basic flows were, and had a fair idea of how I was going to direct the development team, but was constantly fretting over my lack of deep understanding. There were plenty of questions I was afraid were only going to be answered through trial and error, such as:-How do we properly handle large file inputs while maintaining priority for real-time requests?-How do we best package solutions and projects for loosely coupled deployments with minimal downtime?-How many instances of SQL Server are we really going to need?-Why do physical resources seem to not be the limiting factor on performance in some situations?-How do I best illustrate to the dev team the difference between imperative and pub-sub paradigms? This book answered all of those questions for me, and gave a real understanding of what each component and feature was *for*, not just a description of what it was and how to use it.I do suspect the book requires a bit of knowledge of BizTalk up front as it lacks a lot of the lightweight material that comprises most tech books (installation, lists of components and settings, etc.), but I don't consider that to be a flaw.If you have a basic understanding of BizTalk but really want to make the tool do everything it can, this is a fantastic resource.

I recently started learning BizTalk 2010 and have had difficulty finding step-by-step instructions on creating "real world" applications, and the proper way to create them. If you are just starting BizTalk 2010, save yourself a lot of headache and start with this book. It might be a good book for advanced BizTalk developers as well.
