Managing Mission - Critical Domains and DNS

Registries, Registrars, and Whois

In this chapter, we will look at Registries and Registrars, the differences between them, and why it matters to you. Then, we will look at "The Whois," a global database that contains data about domain name registrants, which leads us into intellectual property issues, such as trademarks and domain name disputes.

In this chapter, we will cover the following:

  • Registries and Registrars
  • Types of Top-Level Domains (TLDs)
  • Registrars and Resellers
  • Whois
  • Whois Privacy
  • Where Whois is going

Registries and Registrars

So far, you've seen references to registries and registrars. It's important to understand the difference between them, and how you interact with these entities that exercise direct control over your domain names.

Your domain names are subject to, and impacted by, external and internal factors. Internal factors are the operation of the DNS and the management principles you apply to your portfolio. External factors come from registries under which your domains are registered and the oversight bodies that administer them. Those factors manifest on your portfolio via the conduit of the registrars for each given domain.

To effectively manage your portfolio, you must both be cognizant of, and understand, the influence of these external entities.

A domain registry operates a Top-Level Domain (TLD) for a given namespace .COM is a TLD. Your country has...

What is Whois?

As we outlined in the Anatomy of a domain name section, the domain name can be split into logical sections, such as Registrant, Admin Contact, Tech Contacts, and Nameservers. All of these sections are described and enumerated in records called Whois records and Whois servers serve those records. While in the early days, Whois records were merely informational repositories of points-of-contact for domain names, as the internet became more integral to everyday living and business, these records became of the utmost importance. They have legal bearing now; they are used to decide ownership disputes and liability issues. There exist forensic Whois record auditors who trace domain ownership using these records to assess whether a given domain may be stolen.

The Whois servers are internet hosts that listen for Whois requests (typically on port 43), and they respond to...

Summary

In this chapter, we further explored the various components of the domain name ecosystem. We looked at how the TLDs are operated by various registries, and how we interact with those registries when we register, move, or modify domains, via registrars.

We introduced the Whois database, which tracks registrant details for all of these myriad domains across the multitude of registries, and touched on the state of flux that the Whois landscape is undergoing because of the recently-introduced European data privacy laws, the GDPR.

Description

Managing your organization's naming architecture and mitigating risks within complex naming environments is very important. This book will go beyond looking at “how to run a name server” or “how to DNSSEC sign a domain”, Managing Mission Critical Domains & DNS looks across the entire spectrum of naming; from external factors that exert influence on your domains to all the internal factors to consider when operating your DNS. The readers are taken on a comprehensive guided tour through the world of naming: from understanding the role of registrars and how they interact with registries, to what exactly is it that ICANN does anyway? Once the prerequisite knowledge of the domain name ecosystem is acquired, the readers are taken through all aspects of DNS operations. Whether your organization operates its own nameservers or utilizes an outsourced vendor, or both, we examine the complex web of interlocking factors that must be taken into account but are too frequently overlooked. By the end of this book, our readers will have an end to end to understanding of all the aspects covered in DNS name servers.

Who is this book for?

Ideal for sysadmins, webmasters, IT consultants, and developers-anyone responsible for maintaining your organization's core DNS

DNS plays a critical role, and is often overlooked until problems arise. This book covers many aspects of domain names and DNS, and is well worth reading to better understand these topics. While the book does get into the nitty-gritty with several advanced topics that might be beyond the technical skills of some readers, other sections are less technical and can be digested by all.If you own or manage revenue-producing domain names that would suffer economically when they're offline, then you will likely benefit from many of the topics covered, if only to better improve your security and be able to raise topics of concern with your service providers in an informed manner.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.
