Edge Routing and Networking
Edge routers, bridges, and gateways play an integral role in IoT development. One primary function of edge computing is its ability to bridge networks, route across networks, and provide advanced network management to allow for a seamless enterprise-level of management from a corporate-managed data center to a remote edge device. This requires robust, autonomous, and failsafe networking.
We have already discussed the different PAN and WAN protocols earlier in this book. A significant function of the far-edge router or gateway is to perform the bridging between non-IP networks and other IP-based networks, including cellular and 5G.
We begin this chapter by reviewing some of the fundamentals of routing in general.
