Summary
In this chapter, we looked at various alternatives to usage optimization and reservations. Spot VMs are an excellent way to get deep compute discounts on excess Azure capacity without any commitment. On the other hand, savings plans are a brand new Azure feature and work with the same as reservations. There are distinct advantages to savings plans over reservation. Architecting workloads for Spot VMs can be different, so we looked at the ideal architecture and key characteristics that a workload should exhibit to take advantage of Spot VMs. And lastly, we looked at how to write a cost optimization business case and present it to the finance team. As a FinOps practitioner, you will be frequently doing this and hopefully, the template we have provided will be a good head start in this direction.
