Data Mastering and MDM

Data mastering and Master Data Management (MDM) solutions play a significant role in the overall data strategy. However, they are also complex to implement and achieve success with. More often, these massive, expensive, and long-term projects fail, despite the standing business needs and active support from the data team.

Microsoft was no different in that sense. With four MDM implementations either completely failing or only gaining partial success and limited impact, we learned the hard way what the difficulties of the MDM journey are. Some of these learnings tap into data architecture and technical capabilities, while others shed light on difficulties with effective change management, prioritization, and stakeholder alignment.

In contrast with the previous chapters, we won’t be listing several successful scenarios and best practices. Rather, we will do the opposite – we will go through the entire story of MDM implementations at Microsoft...
