Building Serverless Web Applications

Getting Started with AWS

All major public cloud vendors currently provide serverless products. In this book, the focus will be on AWS, which is often considered the best option with regards to features, costs, and reliability. As we need to use a large number of AWS services throughout the book, this chapter introduces them to help you to get familiar with the building blocks of our sample application.

The main topics covered in this chapter are as follows:

  • Handling user accounts
  • Using the AWS, CLI, and the SDK services
  • Deploying your first Lambda function
  • Other AWS serverless products
  • The architecture of our sample application
  • Estimating costs

After this chapter, you will be able to start playing with AWS.

Amazon Web Services

AWS is the largest cloud vendor in terms of revenues. Often considered the best with regards to features, it offers great serverless products. This is why we have chosen AWS. If you prefer to use another cloud vendor, the following providers are other great options for serverless:

  • Google Cloud Engine: This is where you can use Google Cloud Functions for serverless code execution with Node.js, and Google Cloud Datastore as a serverless database. Also, Google has integrated the Firebase platform, which offers many tools and serverless services for mobile and web applications like storage, authentication, and messaging.
  • Microsoft Azure: This offers Azure Functions for serverless code execution, supporting C#, Node.js, Python, and PHP.
  • IBM Cloud: This offers IBM Bluemix OpenWhisk for serverless code execution, supporting C#, Node.js, Java, and Swift.

The serverless architecture of our online store

In this book, we will build a real-world use case of a serverless solution. This sample application is an online store with the following requirements:

  • List of available products
  • Product details with user rating
  • Add products to a shopping cart
  • Create account and login pages

We will describe and implement each feature in the next chapters. For a better understanding of the architecture, the following diagram gives a general view of how the different services that we covered in this chapter are organized and how they interact:

Estimating costs

In this section, we will estimate the costs of our sample application demo based on some usage assumptions and Amazon's pricing...

Summary

In this chapter, you were introduced to the services that will be used throughout this book. You already know how to create new AWS users with restricted privileges, how to use the AWS CLI and the Node SDK, and what the frontend, backend, and notification services are. This chapter finished showing how each service fits in our sample application architecture and you learned how to estimate its costs.

In the next chapter, you'll be introduced to the Serverless Framework that plays an important role in our development workflow, automating tasks and organizing the code. You'll learn how to configure, deploy Lambda functions, and structure the beginning of our sample application.

Key benefits

  • Get an in-depth understanding of the serverless model
  • Build a complete serverless web application end to end
  • Learn how to use the Serverless Framework to improve your productivity

Description

This book will equip you with the knowledge needed to build your own serverless apps by showing you how to set up different services while making your application scalable, highly available, and efficient. We begin by giving you an idea of what it means to go serverless, exploring the pros and cons of the serverless model and its use cases. Next, you will be introduced to the AWS services that will be used throughout the book, how to estimate costs, and how to set up and use the Serverless Framework. From here, you will start to build an entire serverless project of an online store, beginning with a React SPA frontend hosted on AWS followed by a serverless backend with API Gateway and Lambda functions. You will also learn to access data from a SimpleDB database, secure the application with authentication and authorization, and implement serverless notifications for browsers using AWS IoT. This book will describe how to monitor the performance, efficiency, and errors of your apps and conclude by teaching you how to test and deploy your applications.

Who is this book for?

If you’re looking to learn more about scalable and cost-efficient architectures, this book is for you. Basic knowledge of Node.js skills or familiarity with cloud services is required. For other topics, we cover the basics.

What you will learn

  • Get a grasp of the pros and cons of going serverless and its use cases
  • Discover how you can use the building blocks of AWS to your advantage
  • Set up the environment and create a basic app with the Serverless Framework
  • Host static files on S3 and CloudFront with HTTPS support
  • Build a sample application with a frontend using React as an SPA
  • Develop the Node.js backend to handle requests and connect to a SimpleDB database
  • Secure your applications with authentication and authorization
