As Windows Azure, the service was initially announced in October 2008 and was officially released on February 1, 2010. On March 25, 2014, it was renamed Microsoft Azure.
As of the time of writing, Azure offers 86 services. A few of these services are listed with a brief description of each:
- Virtual Machines: You can setup and launch a virtual machine of any operating system like Windows, Linux, and so on, in seconds.
- App Services: Publish your web and mobile apps over cloud with many predefined templates.
- SQL Databases: Use RDBMS database over cloud as a service.
- Storage Services: Provide scalable cloud storage as per your requirements.
- Azure Cosmos DB: Azure's own NoSQL database that supports multi data models and is scalable.
- Azure Active Directory: It can synchronize with on-premises directories and can work with single sign-on features.
