The Ultimate Studio One Pro Book

Choosing Your Flavor of Studio One

Competition is fierce in the world of Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs), with well-established major contenders having, over time, specialized in different aspects of music production. Although Studio One, the ever-popular DAW developed by PreSonus, is more than a decade old at the time of writing, it’s still considered a newcomer. However, it has garnered a well-deserved reputation as the “program that does it all.”

As exciting as that may be, not everyone needs all the functionality that the full-fledged version has to offer, so PreSonus has come up with several alternative packages to choose from, offering different levels of functionality, complexity, and pricing.

In this chapter, we will go over these versions, analyze the differences, and discuss which user profile each version would be most suitable for. By the end of this chapter, you will have a solid understanding of which version will best meet your needs, and why.

In this chapter, we will cover the following main topics:

  • Meeting the candidates – Prime, Artist, or Pro
  • Picking a one-time purchase or joining Studio One+
  • Sifting through the additional content

Meeting the candidates – Prime, Artist, or Pro

The core Studio One software comes in three flavors:

  • Prime, the free version
  • Artist, the version targeted at home studios
  • Pro, the full-fledged version

In this section, we will compare these versions in detail.

Keep in mind that this book aims to provide extensive coverage of the functions and features of Studio One. Therefore, depending on the version that you decide to work with, you may find that some of the features described in this book are not available in your system.

Free and lightweight – Studio One Prime

Prime is the free version of Studio One and as such it offers tremendous value compared to free DAW alternatives from other vendors. You can record and edit audio and MIDI, arrange and produce your tracks, and mix and master your song using the same intuitive drag-and-drop interface and rock-solid audio engine that made Studio One such a great success.

Prime offers some nifty features that make life easier, and definitely not expected in a free program, including the following:

  • “Comping” and creating the perfect take out of several recordings
  • MIDI retrospective recording (for those moments when you run into a great idea while noodling on your keyboard and say “Oh, I wish I recorded that!”)
  • The Arranger Track, which lets you easily move and copy entire sections of your song (such as the intro, verse, chorus, etc.) within the project to try different arrangements and create different versions of your song (radio-friendly versions, extended versions, etc.)
  • The Pattern Editor, a game-changer in drum programming with an intuitive interface reminiscent of classic drum machines

However, unless you are willing to settle with a very modest production style, you will likely soon run into some limitations, the most important of which are as follows:

  • Only two inputs can be simultaneously used for recording.
  • A very limited set of included (stock) effects plugins, which is only exacerbated by…
  • No support for third-party plugins, not to mention…
  • A very limited number of virtual instruments. Prime only comes with Presence, the Sound Set of which is not significantly better or worse than similar entry-level instruments found on competing DAWs, but you will probably not want to rely on it exclusively in your productions.

Verdict: Prime offers an amazing set of features for a free program. It’s an excellent choice for someone who would like to try their hand at computer-based music production, or for someone with zero budget. But considering today’s music production standards, you are soon likely to run into limitations.

The power of simplicity – Studio One Artist

Artist is aimed at people who want to create their own music and podcasts in a home studio environment. Definitely one of the best contenders at its price point, Artist provides a streamlined workflow, a simple interface, and an easy learning curve. With Artist, you’re free from all the limitations we listed for Prime: you can add third-party effects and instruments and use as many simultaneous inputs as your sound interface will allow.

The most important asset that Artist will bring into your production arsenal is a seriously good set of effects plugins. Although you may now add third-party plugins, chances are you will not need to.

Artist also comes with a solid set of virtual instruments, namely Impact, Mai Tai, Mojito, and SampleOne, as well as the aforementioned Presence. We’ll talk about these in detail later in this chapter, but suffice it to say for now that these instruments will give you enough horsepower to produce great-sounding tracks for most EDM, pop, and hip-hop styles.

You may establish a long and fulfilling relationship with Artist if your goal is to create modest productions or podcasts in a home studio environment. The scenarios in which you may reach its limitations and wish to upgrade to Pro include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • You want to work with the Chord Track and Harmonic Editing to automatically detect and manipulate harmonic content in your song
  • You want to use Score View to notate your song
  • You want better control of the mastering process through the Project page
  • You want to take your productions to the stage using the Show page
  • You want to work with video

Verdict: Artist is an excellent and budget-friendly choice for those who wish to create modest music productions or podcasts in a home studio environment.

Here comes the flagship – Studio One Pro

Studio One Pro is the DAW that does it all. Well, almost. If we compare Pro head to head with all the other DAWs from all other vendors combined, there are still some things that it cannot do, but the gap is very marginal and it is getting smaller with each new version.

With all that functionality under the hood, you would expect Pro to be a pain to learn, but thanks to a very intuitive user interface, and with the help of this book of course, it’s a breeze.

So there’s actually no reason not to go for Pro, other than budget considerations. Having said that, Pro is much easier on the wallet compared to the flagship products of most of its competitors, and major discounts are available throughout the year.

Having worked with all major DAWs, the feeling I get when working with Studio One, and one that I hear a lot from colleagues, is that the development team really listened to feedback given on other DAWs and used it to create the — almost — perfect music production software.

Verdict: If you can afford it, get Studio One Pro. If you can’t afford it, wait until Black Friday and get Studio One Pro.

Note

You can find an up-to-date comparison between different versions of Studio One at https://www.presonus.com/products/studio-one/compare-versions

In this section, we explored the different versions of Studio One and compared the feature sets offered by each. But the choices at your disposal do not end here. Coming up, we will take a close look at another enticing alternative: Studio One+. By the end of the next section, you will have all the information you need to decide which option is best for your needs and your production style.

This 360 page tutorial takes a person through the beginning steps of never using a DAW before to recording, producing and creating imaginative song structure and then the full mix and master process.Or, if you are like me, and have used multiple DAW platforms like Pro Tools, Ableton, and Logic Pro, you can use this book as a guide to familiarize yourself with the tools and workflows of this highly intuitive software.I have had Studio One as a stand by DAW for a long time, but before this book I had only used it once or twice; after I took this book and implemented some of its workflows and really gave the DAW a chance, I found that Studio One is a great tool that was made understandable on a simple and searchable level by the genius of Doruk's explanations.Presonus should include this book with the purchase of any equipment that include Studio One, or at least provide a link for access to purchase. It is an amazing resource, and even if you don't get into Studio One, It can become a great introductory teaching tool for beginning audio production students on microphone technique and best studio practices.

In a humbling step as a 10+ year Studio One veteran, I sat down with this book to find out all of my missing information gaps. I quickly discovered that this book intricately went over every single aspect of Studio One in a format that was beautifully put together. The information that I was being given was not unnecessarily ultra-technical, but instead appealed to readers of all levels and understandings in a way that was so easy to take in on the first read-through. The author certainly has a deep knowledge of this software and has a great easy-to-follow explanation for just about everything. This should be your go-to source for all Studio One knowledge whether you are on day one or day one thousand.

Having been a Studio One user since version 2 along with Avid Pro Tools and a bunch of other tools, dedicating time to the necessary learning curve each one of the tools we get to use piles in front of us has always been the biggest challenge for me, and as far as I can see in the part of the production circles I am a part of, I am not alone. You simply cannot put aside time to just sit down and discover every corner of what feels like the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean lying in front of you across multi displays when you have to work and just get the job done. You just learn to swim while you are trying to stay alive, or that's how it always feels. And we all know how the manufacturers' official documentations are like. You'd rather toss them aside and roll up your sleeves and dive in than trying to make sense of them. This 360-page book is a godsend in that regard. It is very well laid out from the get-go, and eveything is explained in a short-sharp-and-straight-to-the-point manner that gets you results that get you one step closer to the final product with every section you focus your attention to. I became aware of many ingenious sides of everyday tools that present great opportunities to create very striking results that you'd always think you couldn't do in Studio One. Obviously the author knows his trade. And the free PDF download version that came with the printed copy I purchased is like the icing on the cake. I think Presonus should pay the publisher the author's stake and add a copy of this book with every copy of Studio One they sell as the official training material. It is that good. Thanks for this great work. Well chuffed here.

Many developers seek solace in artistic creation when not actively creating code. My personal preference is for creating graphical art through pencil or digital means but many others seek musical endeavors. If music is the preference, and digital music in particular, “The Ultimate Studio One Pro Book” (Packt, 2023) by Dorak Somunkiran offers detailed guidance to develop everything from an individual song to a full show. While noticeably lacking in any coding and with only minimal technical foundations, this book provides step-by-step instructions for every tool and most plugins for the Studio One Pro software. Divided into four parts, the work covers an initial introduction, creating music, editing songs, and then mixing and mastering the entire creation. Recommend for anyone with an interest in digital audio. Part one starts with the most common elements, obtaining and installing Studio One with either the prime, artist, or pro variants. The first option is free, the second is designed for the home artist, and the last is for professional productions. The section covers the basics of the program, installing the appropriate version, and then the basic tabs and instructions. Walking through the tabs highlights a difference between Studio One and other Digital Audio Workstations(DAW) i that Studio One uses song for the smaller element and project for the large one while other DAWs sometimes reverse that flow. The middle sections spend a number of chapters describing how to create and edit music. Creating involves either recording an audio track or directly creating through adding digital music. Once created, every possible option for modifying the sounds is described including eliminating silent sections, transposing various elements from one spot to another, or even changing the pitch and key associated with the recorded music. Not only does the book explain how the tool works with a sample, the author also describes why particular elements might be used. This is a step often skipped during this type of directive documentation. The final section prepares the user to go from their individual environment to playing for a larger audience. A large number of third-party plugins and options are described such as using reverb and other effects as well as useful tricks such as organizing the tracks by color within Studio One or taking advantage of stereo playback by specifying certain sounds to certain speakers. This area also offers the only technical interpretation explaining signal flow through channels and the potential to chain inputs and outputs to different locations. The book wraps up with an appendix suggesting further best practices for everything from technical creation to management practices. While the book did show one what to do with a great number of features, the gap was that no samples were linked or documented to allow the reader to hear the various changes. With any DAW, the true quality resides in how it helps adjust the output, and the lack of samples made this difficult. In large part, this is likely due to the fact that different individuals prefer different music types and adaptions but some connection, even when expanding beyond the merely two-dimensional, would have given a lot of the instructions more impact. Maybe most professional musicians are sufficiently skilled to look at a sine wave or a MIDI track and understand the output but I am not. Overall, this was a great book for anyone involved in Digital Audio Workstations or that process. “The Ultimate Studio One Pro Book” by Dorak Somunkiran provides a step-by-step guide to the paid and free features offered in Studio One. However, since it is intended to promote Studio One, there is no direct comparison to other DAW workstations nor are any samples provided to comparatively assess produced songs or features. If you are in the market for a DAW, Studio One is a good place to start and this book can certainly help.
