WildFly was born with the ambitious aim of replacing Tomcat, the historical web server of Java, with a newer and more intelligent web server, now known as Undertow. Undertow is a project born with WildFly and developed at the same time. The need was born with the advent of HTTP 1.1, which includes the asynchronous web.
Undertow is born by taking into account that every web component always carries with it an asynchronous way of working. For example, the WebSockets that we saw in Chapter 7, Implementing WebSockets, are no longer in accordance with Undertow's philosophy as asynchronous servlet.
The old Tomcat structure for the previous version of JBoss 7 does not allow the web asynchronous, except through additional libraries. Undertow is a project that does not start from old specifications and is, therefore, faster and easier to configure.
