Game design

Before mindlessly creating a game, let’s plan out what kind of game we want to make. This will structure our thoughts and make sure we work toward the game we want to make without taking unnecessary detours. The best way to do this is through a game design document (GDD). Though there is no set format for this kind of document, it should eventually answer some basic questions about the game:

  • Which genre is the game?
  • What mechanics will be in the game?
  • What is the story?

Some game design documents are hundreds of pages long. But as this is not a game design book, let’s define our game regarding these three questions and then work out the details as we go.
