Edge Computing with Amazon Web Services

Getting Started with Edge Computing on AWS

In recent years, a new operating model known as “edge computing” has emerged as a key enabler of digital transformation strategies across a variety of industries and organization types 1. The exponential growth of data generated by an ever-increasing number of connected devices, coupled with an insatiable appetite for real-time processing and analysis, has driven new operational models in the cloud. An example of this is the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). Also known as Industry 4.0, IIoT involves a fusion of traditional industrial processes with advanced techniques such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and real-time data analytics.

Due to this, “edge computing” has become a buzzword. Its meaning has been diluted through overuse by vendors who want in on the opportunities presented by this emerging model of...

The intersection of cloud and edge computing

Definition of cloud computing – according to NIST

Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (for example, networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider (SP) interaction.

AWS can deliver client-server computing in the same way a utility delivers electricity to you – pay-as-you-go with no upfront investment. AWS achieves economies of scale that even the largest businesses struggle to compete with. This is true in obvious ways such as data center and server prices it can negotiate.

It is true in many non-obvious ways as well. AWS has millions of customers and an infrastructure that must be secured both within and without. AWS security operations are world-class because they have to be. When you pay for an EC2 instance...

The AWS edge computing strategy

The combined effects of physics, economics, regulatory compliance, and organizational inertia have led to customers implementing hybrid architectures that require them to continue operating a full data center stack – even if all they want to do is host a few virtual machines.

An example of such a situation is depicted next. In this instance, the customer has built a cloud-native application making full use of the benefits afforded by AWS managed services. This application interacts with their ERP system to provide real-time insights from their manufacturing plants. However, because their ERP system must reside in a particular geography, they have retained a small physical footprint in their corporate data center. Their developers have to interact with on-premise components using different APIs than they use for cloud-based elements. Their operations team has to use a different set of tools to manage those resources, and what’s worse...

Overview of the AWS edge computing toolbox

The AWS edge computing strategy aims to provide a comprehensive suite of services and solutions that enable businesses to harness the power of edge computing, addressing the challenges of data processing, latency, security, and scalability. By bringing AWS services and resources closer to end users and devices, this strategy allows organizations to optimize their applications and infrastructure for improved performance, efficiency, and user experience.

Key components of the AWS edge computing strategy include the following topics.

Localized AWS infrastructure and services

AWS offers solutions such as AWS Outposts, AWS Local Zones, and AWS Wavelength to extend the AWS cloud infrastructure to on-premises environments, local data centers, and even mobile networks. These localized infrastructure solutions enable lower latency, reduced data transfer costs, and better compliance with data sovereignty regulations.

AWS Snow Family facilitates...

Summary

In this chapter, we discussed the opportunities and challenges that edge computing presents. This includes those imposed by the laws of physics, the laws of economics, and the law of the land. We covered the AWS edge computing strategy, which is to extend its infrastructure and services closer to end users, allowing developers and operations staff to have a consistent experience via common APIs and management constructs.

We covered existing IIoT systems and protocols and introduced you to how AWS can integrate with them. We explored how MEC with 5G networks offers a unique opportunity for both MNOs and application developers to extend cloud applications closer to users on mobile devices. We also discussed the challenges associated with DDIL use cases in edge computing, as well as the transformative impact of immersive experiences and given example use cases you may not have considered before.

Finally, we briefly introduced you to AWS Local Zones, AWS Outposts, AWS Snow...

Description

The surge in connected edge devices has driven organizations to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the massive amounts of data generated by these devices. However, adapting to this landscape demands significant changes in application architectures. This book serves as your guide to edge computing fundamentals, shedding light on the constraints and risks inherent in selecting solutions within this domain. You’ll explore an extensive suite of edge computing services from AWS, gaining insights into when and how to use AWS Outposts, AWS Wavelength, AWS Local Zones, AWS Snow Family, and AWS IoT Greengrass. With detailed use cases, technical requirements, and architectural patterns, you’ll master the practical implementation of these services and see how they work in real life through step-by-step examples, using the AWS CLI and AWS Management Console. To conclude, you’ll delve into essential security and operational considerations to maximize the value delivered by AWS services. By the end of this book, you'll be ready to design powerful edge computing architectures and handle complex edge computing use cases across multiple AWS services.

Who is this book for?

This book is designed for cloud architects, cloud engineers, solutions architects, and IoT architects tasked with building edge compute solutions using AWS. If you want to master the full range of edge computing services offered by AWS, this book is for you. A basic understanding of AWS services and networking is assumed.

This book covers the most recent advancements in cloud computing at the edge, and does an excellent job of breaking down a multitude of needs for hybrid computing operations. The depth in which the author goes into the various AWS offerings on edge solutions is very helpful, and from what I can tell is very comprehensive with the latest available technology. This book is great for those who want to get a better understanding of distributed cloud technologies, and in particular, what AWS has to offer.

This book doesn’t only explain AWS edge services like Wavelength. Local Zones, Outposts, and Greengrass. It also gives a good understanding of the context in which these services operate. For example it explains how 5G networks are different from 4G. Then it goes into why 5G network architecture presents an opportunity to run EC2 instances directly inside the telco networks themselves. An EC2 instance that is 1 millisecond away from a 5G devices opens up many new use cases that weren’t possible before.I cannot recommend this book enough.
