To persuade a candidate to join a vacant position, a mutual desire for association must be generated through a series of discussions. That means both parties are simultaneously buying and selling; the interviewer's decision to hire and the interviewee's decision to join are equally significant. The success of an interview process, especially when it's conducted via telephone, is largely contingent upon the interviewer's performance. As we discussed in previous chapters, there are many things that an interviewer must do to reach a conclusive decision. But an interviewer should be equally careful about the things that they must not do to ensure that the candidate does not come away with a negative opinion about the interviewer, job, or the company.
