The Lambda service operates an Amazon Linux operating system to provide the resources necessary to execute the code. Usually, this is a stable version of Amazon Linux with a kernel that is destined for long-term support. At the time of writing, the Linux kernel in the Lambda environment is 4.14, which is quite a modern kernel so we can expect a large number of runtimes to be supported. The programming languages currently supported natively within the Lambda environment are Java, Go, PowerShell, Node.js, C#, Python, and Ruby, but Lambda also provides a runtime API that allows us the ability to use any other programming language to run our functions.
