I consider myself a career software professional with over 23 years of working on software development and systems engineering in various forms. The current wave of software development is all about automation, integration of all pieces of code and its dependencies and ensuring that you are delivering code that is free of security vulnerabilities and defects."Automating DevOps with GitLab CI/CD Pipelines" is a well-written book. It starts off with a background of traditional software development and the manual processes that people were used to in building, verifying, packaging, and deploying code. I have personally lived through the evolution of software version control systems such as CVS and SVN, and the authors did a great job of taking the reader through that evolution up to Git, and identifying all the challenges and shortcomings of the manual processes before the practices of DevOps came along. I also appreciate the authors for a nice primer on Git if you are not used to it.This book builds upon the concepts nicely and with very clear explanations and hands-on examples (the Hats for Cats web app!), they take you through the journey of building agile software and automating the end-to-end software lifecycle with GitLab, building CI/CD pipelines, and covering all aspects of creating secure, verifiable software in a repeatable way.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in gaining a solid understanding of the principles of secure software engineering and implementing DevOps and automation using modern tools such as Git and GitLab.

As someone in the industry always looking to expand my current skill set, I was looking for resources to prepare my team to migrate our pipelines to GitLab. Much to my delight, I was made aware that this book was being published and thought that this would be a great asset to learn and reference in the future. Thankfully, this book delivers just that. The first couple chapters are excellent for those looking to get started with Git in general. They cover basic Git operations as well as a fictional scenario to demonstrate why changes to the software development life cycle were necessary to allow for quicker turnaround of a product. This may be a refresher for some, but it is a welcome inclusion. After presenting the fundamentals, the authors go into detail to describe the pipeline structure within GitLab and provide further foundations and terminology that you will apply throughout the book. The second section is more hands on, with code examples and discussion around installing and setting up runners for your pipeline. Best practices behind building the pipeline, verifying code, setting up tests of the different scenarios described in the earlier chapters are also covered. Finally, the last section book provides guidance and puts the reader into the mindset of continuing to optimize the pipelines that were constructed. It helps to understand how to use caching and artifacts to speed up builds, and how to maintain reusability by leveraging parent-child pipelines.Overall, I think this was a fantastic book that was presented in an easy to follow manner with plenty of relatable code examples. While I didn’t find all of the test automation to be helpful, that is to say that it’s not a mark against the book. Rather some tests and configurations featured in the book were not something my current organization utilizes. If you’re someone looking to make the most of GitLab, this would be a great place to start as it will get you up and running, and provide you with the knowledge to implement GitLab using the best practices from the start.
