Tracing BLAST’s history
BLAST was conceptualized in 2008 during an engagement by Al Shalloway with a client that was using Scrum effectively but couldn’t deliver quickly. Although the teams were working on the same product, they operated independently and only attempted integration every two weeks. This led to long final integration times.
By viewing the work as a single value stream instead of separate Agile-based teams, it was quickly determined that a common backlog would create alignment and facilitate full integration after each sprint. The BLAST approach eliminated the need for extensive coordination, expedited integrations, and provided quick feedback across the teams.
This real-world example demonstrates how BLAST can transform team operations and significantly enhance efficiency and delivery speed. Today, this approach also better accommodates the highly accelerated software deliveries enabled via CI/CD and DevOps toolchains.
