IP Telephony and Collaboration Services Security
In the previous chapters, we learned about network protocols, databases, applications connecting protocols such as LAN, IP, SMB, and TCP/UDP, and their common attacks. This chapter talks about a completely different network protocol called the IP telephony protocol or in other words Voice over IP (VoIP).
VoIP technology came about in the mid '90s when the cost of calling was very high. Researchers developed an idea to take calling a step further and switch to internet-based calling, and then the technology named VoIP came into existence.
This chapter starts with an explanation of the VoIP protocol – the VoIP architecture, VoIP protocols such as Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP), and so on. We will look at the VoIP packets in the network, the structure of VoIP, and how to perform VoIP network penetration testing.
