After a step has been added, you will need to set its properties. For a Data Step, as shown in the next figure, you need to select a Data Field. The field list will contain fields for the entity associated with the stage. Step Name will default to the display name of the field. The name can be changed to suit your process flow:

You can mark a step as required so that users must enter some data for the step before they can proceed to the next stage. This is commonly called stage-gating.
A field does not have to be on the form to be used as a step in a business process flow. If a field is on the form as well as in the process flow, then entering data in the step updates the field on the form and vice versa.
