Time for action—setting up long form patterns
We're going to be creating longer patterns for this section. Upon opening LMMS, we need to get set up again. Do the following to get set up:
- Open LMMS.
- Create a new project.
- Save the new project as
Advanced Beatmaking
. - Drag the sample kick_hiphop01 from the side bar My Samples | Drums to the Beat+Bassline Editor.
- Extend the editor to 32 steps.
Now our Beat+Bassline Editor is good to go. If you need to review the process of getting the Beat+Bassline Editor set up, refer to Chapter 3, Getting Our Hands Dirty: Creating in LMMS.xs
After this initial setup, we need to decide a couple of things right out of the gate. We've explored some different styles of music and determined that tempo is a big factor for what kind of beat we are going to create. Most dance music lives within the tempo range of 120 and 135 beats per minute (bpm). There are styles that are slower and faster, but the sweet spot is really from 120 bpm to 135 bpm.
