Learning Android Forensics

Setting up the Android Forensic Environment

Before starting a forensic examination, you need a workstation. A forensic analyst needs to be in total control of their workstation at all times. This chapter will take you through everything that is necessary to have an established forensic setup for examining Android devices. The following topics are going to be covered in this chapter:

  • Android forensic setup
  • Android Debug Bridge
  • Rooting Android

Android forensic setup

Setting up a sound and well-controlled forensic environment is crucial before the start of any investigation. Start with a fresh and forensically sterile computer. A forensically sterile computer is one that prevents the potential of cross-contamination and doesn't introduce unwanted data. This is to ensure that the software present on the machine does not interfere with the current investigation. Install basic software, such as the ones mentioned in the following list, which are necessary to connect to the device and to perform analysis:

  • Android SDK
  • Drivers for mobile devices
  • Office packages
  • Tools used for analysis

Android SDK

It's important that we begin the discussion with Android Studio...

Android Debug Bridge

In Android forensics, Android Debug Bridge (ADB) plays a very crucial role. It is present under the <sdk_path>/platform-tools location. In order to work with ADB, the USB-Debugging option needs to be enabled. On most Android phones and tablets, you can access this under Settings | Developer Options, as shown in the following screenshot:

USB debugging option

However, this may not be the case with all the devices, as different devices have different environments and configuration features. Sometimes, the examiner might have to use certain techniques to access the Developer Options on a few devices. These techniques are device-specific and need to be researched and determined by the forensic analyst based on the device type and model.

On some devices, the Developer Options menu is hidden and can be turned on by tapping the Build Number field (present...

Rooting Android

Rooting is a word that is very often heard with respect to Android devices. As a forensic examiner, it is essential to understand this in detail. This would help you to gain knowledge that is required to understand the internals of the device and gain expertise on several issues that are encountered during an investigation. Rooting Android phones has become a common phenomenon and very often rooted phones are encountered during investigations. Also, depending upon the situation and data to be extracted, the examiner themself has to root the device in order to extract certain data. The following sections cover rooting an Android device and other related concepts in detail.

What is rooting?

Description

Many forensic examiners rely on commercial, push-button tools to retrieve and analyze data, even though there is no tool that does either of these jobs perfectly. Learning Android Forensics will introduce you to the most up-to-date Android platform and its architecture, and provide a high-level overview of what Android forensics entails. You will understand how data is stored on Android devices and how to set up a digital forensic examination environment. As you make your way through the chapters, you will work through various physical and logical techniques to extract data from devices in order to obtain forensic evidence. You will also learn how to recover deleted data and forensically analyze application data with the help of various open source and commercial tools. In the concluding chapters, you will explore malware analysis so that you’ll be able to investigate cybersecurity incidents involving Android malware. By the end of this book, you will have a complete understanding of the Android forensic process, you will have explored open source and commercial forensic tools, and will have basic skills of Android malware identification and analysis.

I think it might be helpful to spend more time on stating why doing something may be important, and to add example cases to highlight the importance of certain actions. A lot of time was spent teaching readers how to use a specific version of software rather than stating why that software was useful. I felt at time the focus on the cost of software was unnecessary - professionals should use the right tools not because they are free.Another lacking element was a discussion of the device as a forensic entity - can investigators touch the screen and how to use adb shell input to bypass handling the device

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon
