Description
OSGi is a tried and true modularity standard for Java. It has in recent years gained a lot of traction and tooling; becoming frequently used in Enterprise containers and distributed software systems. "Instant OSGi Starter" is where you should start before beginning your first OSGi based project. You'll be exposed to the core concepts, gain practical experience with the most important features, and learn about the basic tenets of modular code practices. This book begins with the fundamental tools needed for building modular applications, top features with basic tenets of modular core practices and provides useful insights into resources and the community. As this book progresses you will be able to get started programming in OSGi whilst looking at the default three layer design so the application will be architected towards modularity and simplicity.Through exploring several tools and technologies and browsing the communities you will be able to work towards modular programming in OSGi.
Who is this book for?
"Instant OSGi Starter" is intended for the senior Java programmer whom will be joining OSGi based projects, or for Architects looking to broaden their exposure to OSGi as a beneficial framework and runtime software system.
What you will learn
Discover the basic tenets of the Open Services Gateway initiative and modular programming
Deploy and manage your OSGi applications in a runtime container
Gain familiarity with OSGi tooling
Understand the Bundle as the most basic layer of OSGI modularity
Master the OSGi Lifecycle model for modular code
Gain exposure to key OSGi patterns such as Whiteboard and Extender
Find more information and supporting communities for OSGi developers
This is definitely the best and shortest introduction into OSGi I've read by now. The authors where capable to give a broad and good introduction into the technology in less than 60 pages making it possible to get a fundamental, but broad introduction into the specification within a weekend. Great work!

I had an opportunity to go through this book. OSGi is a simple component oriented architecture (only the concept is simple), but the implementation is little too complicated in reality. This book in my perspective is just a starter on OSGi which it has covered it well.Good things about the book:1. The author listed all the required software's and in fact, they have put all the screenshots as well2. They have given as much as information as possible to get started with OSGi3. The OSGi base concept is very well summarized.4. Explanation of various OSGi headers is a very helpful referenceMissing or things to improve:1. In my perspective, it could have been even a slimmer version as a quick start.2. Most likely when someone starts with anything new, it is quite common that people run into lot of issues. The author could have dedicated a section to discuss few of the common issues and remedies for beginners.3. Few of the links are not working directly from the PDF (you need to copy paste to make it work).I would say from my perspective that it is a good starter for anyone new to OSGi but it could have been better. If you don't get the concepts of OSGi first time, have a go at it again a couple of times as it is little confusing in OSGi when you start.

I bought this book yesterday, trying to learn OSGi. But, this book is falling way short of my expectation. It's an unpolished book. A lot of things are missing, and it has a steep prerequisites, even for an experience Java developer, such as myself. It has a rushed feeling, as if the authors were just moonlighting and didn't spend any serious effort in tuning it for the readers. All in all, I discourage people from wasting money on an unpolished content, such as this one.
