Full Stack Web Development with Raspberry Pi 3

Getting Up-and-Running with Web Development on the Raspberry Pi

The web is an amazing place. It's open, it's free, and almost all the information available to human kind is available any time, any place, and right at our fingertips. It is amazing that we live in an age when the web is just starting to show its colors and full potential. However, if you look at it from another point of view, all the internet really is is just a bunch of computers connected together with wires or, sometimes, wirelessly. It is this illusion that gives us the impression that the internet is actually something bigger, when in fact it's just a large network of computers.

After you are done with this book, you will be adding one more computer to this network, thus doing your own bit to make the internet a better place. To understand how the internet works, we have to first understand the...

The network

A single computer on its own can achieve a lot, but its capability becomes exponentially larger when it can communicate with other computers. This communication occurs among computers that belong to the same network.

A computer can be a part of a network through various means: such as an Ethernet cable or through Wi-Fi. In the previous chapter, we observed the output of the ifconfig command, which showed us the different interfaces through which our device could possibly be connected.

Now that we know a network can have multiple computers, the next question that arises is about how each computer is identified on the network. This is what each device's IP address (or IPv4 address, to be more precise) is used for. It specifies the location and acts as an identifier for each device connected to a network.

The dotted boundary in the figure represents a single network...

The web development stack

A development stack is actually a very loosely defined term, which actually refers to the list of technologies and frameworks that you need in order to get an application up-and-running. It's called a stack because each layer is more and more abstracted from the user. Consider the example of the popular MEAN stack (MongoDB, Express, AngularJS, Node.js). If we were to actually make a physical stack out of these, it would look like this:

AngularJS is served by the Express server, which is run by the Node.js JavaScript runtime, which in turn is able to interact with the MongoDB database.

What's important to note is that as we move down the stack, each layer gets more and more inaccessible to the user of our application:

  • The user has full and uninhibited access to the frontend Angular code.
  • There is limited interaction with the Express server...

Summary

We looked at how computers, in general, connect and communicate with one another and also how different services running on a single computer can interact with one another on different ports. We then went on to discuss the different components of the web development stack and the different ways in which they could interact with each other and how they are useful in building our application. This included four main components: the server, sensor, database, and user interface. Finally, we were able to look at the high-level architecture made using all the concepts we discussed previously.

This chapter may have looked like it had a lot of theory, but an understanding of the big picture is very important before we move on to the details.

In the coming chapters, we will start with actually implementing each component we discussed here so that we can get our hands dirty.

Description

Modern web technology and portable computing together have enabled huge advances in the Internet of Things (IoT) space,as well as in areas such as machine learning and big data. The Raspberry Pi is a very popular portable computer for running full stack web applications. This book will empower you to master this rapidly evolving technology to develop complex web applications and interfaces. This book starts by familiarizing you with the various components that make up the web development stack and that will integrate into your Raspberry Pi-powered web applications. It also introduces the Raspberry Pi computer and teach you how to get up and running with a brand new one. Next, this book introduces you to the different kinds of sensor you’ll use to make your applications; using these skills, you will be able to create full stack web applications and make them available to users via a web interface. Later, this book will also teach you how to build interactive web applications using JavaScript and HTML5 for the visual representation of sensor data. Finally, this book will teach you how to use a SQLite database to store and retrieve sensor data from multiple Raspberry Pi computers. By the end of this book you will be able to create complex full stack web applications on the Raspberry Pi 3 and will have improved your application’s performance and usability.

Who is this book for?

This book is aimed at hobbyist, enthusiasts, and developers eager to develop embedded device-powered web applications. Prior programming experience with JavaScript, HTML5, and Node.JS will be beneficial.

Although I've had this book for a while now, I only recently decided to dust off my Raspberry Pi and get stuck into reading it. This book brings together the power of the Raspberry Pi and Google's very own cloud, specifically Firebase, with all of its powerful services. This is THE book I was looking for on these subjects, and at the time I couldn't find any other books that covered the topics that are covered in this book. Although the internet is full of tutorials and blog posts, no where else will you find a complete, start-to-finish, full stack example of logging sensor data to Firebase. There are plenty of books out there but they mainly cover IoT in a general sense. I found this book easy to read. Don't be fooled by the 200 page length of it. The descriptions are short and to the point, with the emphasis being on the all-important JavaScript code examples.

Less than 200 pages. Worthless. Useless. Trivial. Waste of time. Not what I had hoped for. A good reason to avoid further purchases from Packt.
