Compute optimization key concepts
Before getting deep into compute optimization, let’s introduce a few concepts and ideas that need to be fully understood to better grasp the ideas behind each initiative presented across the chapter.
To begin with, we are going to introduce a key concept that will be used throughout the optimize foundation, which is cost optimization quick wins.
Quick wins
We consider any cost optimization initiative a quick win if it satisfies the following conditions:
- Has no impact, or minimal impact, on running workloads. It does not need to be applied during a maintenance window.
- Does not change a solution design in a major way. Usually, a quick win is a change in a configuration that can be easily applied without redeploying or recreating a resource or the whole solution.
- Can provide instantaneous savings, even if small.
