Amazon S3 Essentials

Chapter 2. S3 using the AWS Management Console

The AWS Management Console is a browser-based graphical user interface in which users can manage the resources at Amazon Web Services.

The AWS Management Console supports the following browsers:

  • Firefox
  • Chrome
  • Internet Explorer
  • Safari

The AWS Management Console mobile app is also available on iOS and Android.

In this chapter, we will focus on manipulating the AWS console. We will interact with Amazon S3 using the AWS Management Console. AWS provides a Graphical User Interface (GUI) to manage Amazon S3 resources and tasks, so it is easier to understand and configure as per our needs. We will take a detailed look into managing buckets, objects, and the operations that can be performed on the objects.

We will cover the following topics in this chapter:

  • Logging in to the AWS Management Console
  • Bucket operations
  • Folder operations
  • Object operations
  • Versioning

Logging in to the AWS Management Console

To log in to the AWS Management Console, go to http://aws.amazon.com/ and click on AWS Management Console, as shown in the following screenshot:

Clicking on S3 will direct you to the Amazon S3 Console. We can manage the bucket here:

Bucket operations

A bucket is a container in Amazon S3 into which files are uploaded. To use Amazon S3 to store a file, you need to create at least one bucket. The bucket name should be unique because it is shared by all users. Files (objects) are stored in buckets. Buckets can contain nested folders and subfolders. But they cannot contain nested buckets. You can create a maximum of 100 buckets in a single account.

The bucket name that you specify can contain letters, numbers, periods, and dashes. The name should start with a letter or a number, and it should be between 3 characters and 63 characters long. A bucket doesn't restrict the user to a size limit.

Click on the Create Bucket button seen in the preceding screenshot, and a dialog box for creating a bucket pops up, as shown in the following image:

Bucket operations

We created a bucket named sg-bucket-2015, with the region as Singapore; Amazon S3 allows us to create region-specific buckets. This will also be the region from where your Amazon S3 objects...

Folder operations

The folders in Amazon S3 are S3 files that are used to put Amazon S3 objects together under one group. The S3 folders are similar to the file system in computers. Nested folders can be created. Permissions can also be levied on folders, as in the case of Amazon S3 objects. Folders are just treated as a prefix to the objects—they are used as the key name prefix for the objects.

Folder operations

As you can see in the preceding screenshot, we have created a folder named sg-folder. Once the folder name is given, you cannot rename it. You can create and delete folders. You can even make a folder and its objects accessible to the public.

Folder operations

As seen in the preceding screenshot, under the folder tab, we have an option to:

  • Create Folder…
  • Upload

So, using the Create Folder… option, we can create folders within the folder.

Folder operations

A folder can be made publicly accessible by clicking on the Make Public option:

Folder operations

You can delete the folder when you don't need it anymore, as shown in the following...

Object operations

In the bucket/folder section, there is an option to create a folder or upload an object:

Object operations

Clicking on Upload displays a pop-up window, which allows the user to select the Add Files or Upload Folder options using Enable Enhanced Uploader (BETA):

Object operations

We added the files index.html, index-1.html, and index-2.html using Add Files. Look at the listing of the files under the sg-folder folder in the following screenshot:

Object operations

While adding files, you can also set the details, permissions, and metadata for the group of files that is being added. However, you can even set the details, permissions, and metadata after the files have been uploaded.

There are two options under the Set Details section:

  • Use Reduced Redundancy Storage
  • Use Server Side Encryption

Use Reduced Redundancy Storage

Amazon S3 provides the subscribers an optional feature for storing data with the RRS storage class. It is basically for storing non-critical and reproducible data at lower levels of redundancy. The cost of storing using...

Versioning

Versioning enables us to store different versions of an object. It helps us to store, retrieve, and restore old objects. This can be useful when we accidentally delete or modify an object. In such a case, we can restore the last stable object. If we delete an object, Amazon S3 inserts a delete marker for that object rather than deleting it permanently. If we overwrite the object, Amazon S3 creates a new version of the same.

Versioning can be done in any of the following states:

  • Unversioned—the default
  • Versioning enabled
  • Versioning-suspended

To enable versioning, click on the bucket and under the Properties tab, click on the Versioning tree:

Versioning

When we click on Enable Versioning, it asks for confirmation. Since storing many versions of an object would cost a lot, it is better to define the lifecycle rules for the object.

Hi,I have written a detailed chapter-by-chapter review of this book on www DOT i-programmer DOT info, the first and last parts of this review are given here. For my review of all chapters, search i-programmer DOT info for STIRK together with the book's title. As the technology world increasingly migrates to the cloud, knowledge of Amazon Simple Storage Service should prove useful. Does this book help?Aimed at developers and architects, it has around 90 working pages, split over 5 chapters. Some basic knowledge of Java (or similar) is required to understand the example code.Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.Chapter 1 Know-How about S3The book opens by describing Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) as online object storage, accessible via REST and SOAP web service interfaces, and BitTorrent. The various advantages of S3 are discussed (e.g. backup, archive, huge storage, highly scalable, elastic pricing, and security). The chapter then discusses some basic concepts that are used throughout the book. A bucket is a container where files (objects) are uploaded. Buckets can contain nested folders and subfolders. An object is a stored file. A key is assigned when an object is created, and used to retrieve the object.Next, a useful list of S3 functionality is given, including: *Allows website hosting – pay for what use (useful for start-ups) *Scalability – ‘unlimited’ storage *Reliability – guarantees 99.9% uptime *Security – strong authentication mechanism *Standard interfaces – access via REST and SOAPThe chapter ends with a brief look at some different ways S3 can be used, including: file hosting, website hosting, and data backup. A useful diagram shows how S3 integrates with other Amazon components (e.g. Elastic Cloud Compute [EC2]) for a more complete picture. This chapter provides a useful overview of what S3 is, its basic components, and its advantages. The chapter is easy to read, with helpful diagrams and step-by-step walkthroughs (in later chapters). These traits apply to the whole of the book....ConclusionThis book aims to teach you about Amazon S3 quickly, and certainly succeeds. The book is very easy to read, with plenty of screenshots to support the many step-by-step walkthroughs. There are useful explanations of what S3 is, and how to use it (via the management console and programmatically). As cloud computing becomes increasingly popular, knowledge of S3 should be ever more useful.I have two concerns. Firstly, the code should be commented and discussed (that said, it is not too difficult to understand). Secondly, the subject matter seems to be too isolated, I would have liked more discussion on its integration with the other Amazon technologies such as EC2.It should be noted that Amazon Web Services also provide some very readable S3 tutorials. If you want to know what S3 is, its advantages, and how to use it follow this link to a helpful tutorial: http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/gsg/GetStartedWithS3.html.

This is a chapter, not a book. You can a better introduction to S3 online.I buy technical books because of the space they offer for thoughts and insightful comments included by authors with experience. This book has none of that. Instead the author needlessly enumerates tedious lists like availability zones (likely outdated), numerous screenshots of the AWS interface, and repetitive, complete Java code listings (including imports) seemingly in an effort to make it to 91 pages. It's a half-hour read.Various options are covered without any explanation of why they're important, examples of who would use them, or indeed any explanation of how or why concepts differ under the S3 paradigm. For example, there is a listing to describe how to create a folder, with no mention that "folders" are not a primary concept in S3. This has some important consequences which should have been included. You'll get more detail from the S3 docs themselves, not to mention other online resources.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
