To understand what Prowl is, you first need to understand what Growl is. Growl is a small application that runs on your Mac or PC that other applications can leverage to create non-obtrusive notifications on your computer. For example, if you're running the Instant Messenger client Adium and a friend sends you a message, Growl will display a small message in the upper-right-hand corner with a snippet of the message, giving you the option to either respond or ignore.
