Oracle Data Integrator 11g Cookbook

Chapter 2. Defining the Oracle Data Integrator Security

The recipes in this chapter will help users understand and learn how to:

  • Setting up LDAP security for Oracle Data Integrator

  • Setting external authentication with Oracle Data Integrator

  • Creating users using generic profiles

  • Creating users using non-generic profiles

  • Creating new custom profiles in the Security navigator

Introduction

Oracle Data Integrator provides, out of the box, a comprehensive security framework allowing administrators to manage users, assign pre-defined security profiles, or grant access to particular objects in a specific repository. ODI also offers the ability to integrate with external authentication mechanisms to authenticate users accessing ODI itself or the source and target systems.

It is recommended to familiarize yourself with the ODI security concepts prior to following this chapter's recipes. You can refer to the Managing the Security in Oracle Data Integrator chapter in the ODI documentation, which at the date of this publication could be found at http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/integrate.1111/e12643/security.htm#CDDIFFCB.

Setting up LDAP security for Oracle Data Integrator

By default, ODI authenticates users as well as user privileges against the security information stored in the ODI master repository. Beginning with the ODI 11.1.1.3 release, ODI can utilize OPSS to authenticate users against a variety of identity stores. This architecture allows ODI users to be authenticated outside of ODI, however ODI's internal security still provides the user's authorization to the ODI objects. ODI users and their privileges must be created in ODI's internal security. The ODI users are mapped to the identity store and, during authentication, the ODI user is authenticated against the identity store, and once authenticated, ODI's internal security provides the authorization of the user to ODI objects.

OPSS works with a variety of identity stores; more information on OPSS can be found here at http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/core.1111/e10043/underjps.htm#CIHFHJCC.

This recipe will utilize the LDAP Server, which is embedded...

Setting external authentication with Oracle Data Integrator

Oracle Platform Security Services works with a variety of identity stores; more information on OPSS can be found here at http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/core.1111/e10043/underjps.htm#CIHFHJCC.

This recipe will utilize the LDAP Server, which is embedded with Oracle WebLogic Server. The Oracle WebLogic Embedded LDAP Server was configured for ODI external authentication in the previous recipe, Setting up LDAP Security with ODI.

For this recipe, the Oracle WebLogic Embedded LDAP Server will be used to authenticate ODI users with ODI Studio as well as the ODI Agent processes for both standalone and the JEE agents. Oracle WebLogic 10.1.3.6.0 was installed with the default settings. ODI was then installed in the same Oracle Middleware_HOME directory and an ODI JEE agent was then deployed to a managed server within this instance of Oracle WebLogic; the WebLogic domain is named ODI_AGENT.

Once the Oracle WebLogic Embedded LDAP Server has...

Creating users using generic profiles

Out of the box, ODI provides Profiles containing predefined security rules that can be used to easily grant privileges to new or existing users. We will be utilizing some of those Profiles to create a new user who will be developing ETL mappings.

Getting ready

In this recipe, we will reuse the repositories and objects created in the recipes of Chapter 10, Advanced Coding Techniques using the ODI SDK. Follow the instructions in those recipes to create them. You can also follow the instructions using your own repository. No other prerequisites are required.

How to do it...

  1. In ODI Studio, go to the ODI menu, then click on Connect and log into your repository using an ODI supervisor user.

  2. Open up Security navigator and expand both the Profiles and Users accordions. You should see a structure similar to the following screenshot:

  3. Click on the New User button in the Users accordion to open up the user creation wizard.

  4. Next, specify a name in the Name field; we use...

Creating users using non-generic profiles

ODI offers the flexibility to specify security privileges at the object level, such as giving a user the ability to only access one project or one folder in a project. We will be utilizing a non-generic profile and providing access to one single interface to a user.

Getting ready

In this recipe, we will reuse the user named Cookbook Developer that we created in the previous recipe, Creating users using generic profiles. Follow the necessary steps of that recipe to create it. You can also follow the instructions using your own repository. No other prerequisites are required.

How to do it...

  1. In ODI Studio, go to the ODI menu, then click on Connect and log into your repository using an ODI supervisor user.

  2. In Security navigator, expand the Cookbook Developer user and its Profiles node, then right-click on the DESIGNER profile and select Delete.

Click on Yes in the Confirmation window.

Next, drag-and-drop the NG DESIGNER profile to this user and click on...

Creating new custom profiles in the Security navigator

ODI users have the ability to create their own security profiles in the Security navigator. In this recipe, we will be duplicating the DESIGNER profile and editing it to remove access to all CDC functionality.

Getting ready

In this recipe, we will reuse the user named Cookbook Developer that we created in the recipe Creating users using generic profiles. Follow the necessary steps of that recipe to create it. You can also follow the instructions using your own repository. No other prerequisites are required.

How to do it...

  1. In ODI Studio, go to the ODI menu, then click on Connect and log into your repository using an ODI supervisor user.

  2. In the Security navigator, open the Profiles accordion.

  3. Right-click on the DESIGNER profile and select Duplicate Selection :

Click on Yes to confirm the duplication.

  4. Next, double-click on the copy of DESIGNER profile to open it and rename it to NON-CDC DESIGNER. Click on Save to save this new profile.

  5. Then...

As the title implies, the book contains a number of straightforward “recipes” for solving various Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) data loading/transformation design problems that are commonly encountered during an ODI development project. As is the case with any software development tool, there is often more than one design approach that will “work”. Determining which design approach to use is often based on the familiarity and experience that the developer has with the ODI tool. This book is a valuable reference that will save you time as it demonstrates the proper way to use the various ODI methods in different situations.I highly recommend this book for the advanced ODI developer. It is well-written and easy-to-understand, but assumes that you already have experience with the ODI 11 tool.As a suggested approach, I feel that this book should be read twice -- the first time to gain familiarity with the concepts and the second time to work through the problems and solutions which require you to have access to an ODI instance.ODI is now the standard for Oracle Middleware interfaces and so its usage will only increase. This book will continue to be an excellent reference for years to come.

Among the major ETL tools in the market , Oracle Data Integrator outshines not just for a couple of reason. Oracle has invested a lot in developing the tool after it took over from Sunopsis. The tool is placed as a part of the Oracle Fusion Middleware stack. If you are a customer who is using Oracle Warehouse Builder , then ODI is a similar tool but it is engineered for the next generation ETL with many features. All the transformations happens on the target database as SQL ,so it is not a black box and it allows developers/administrators to look into what is going on and helps in quick debugging. ETL happening via ODI uses the resource of the target database server.I would like to recommend a Hands-On Tutorial Book that has been published by PACKT which covers the below topics in detail.Installation, Deployment, and ConfigurationDefining the Oracle Data Integrator SecurityAdvanced TopologyUsing VariablesKnowledge Module InternalsInside Knowledge ModulesAdvanced Coding TechniquesPackage Loop and File ProcessingXML and Web ServicesAdvanced Coding Techniques Using the SDK

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
