Simple Selections: Background Select


Accurate selections have always been the bane of the creative photographer because the objects we want to select, and the tools we have to do the job, are varied and mixed. Most selection tools can do the job well, but their degree of success is countered by the style of the image in question. Photoshop Elements 2024 introduces two new selection tools based on its AI technology and on its existing super-efficient Select Subject tool.
Select>Background and Select>Sky are useful variations on Select Subject - I decided to put them to the test to see how they fared with the photographer's most feared subject: a fuzzy, hairy or unfocussed subject!
Left: Rarely do we get presented with an easy selection task - like selecting as hard-edged white box that's been photographed against a dark background. At least this studio shot of the pooch has an even-toned backdrop that should make the selection process easier...
