Enterprise Security: A Data-Centric Approach to Securing the Enterprise

Chapter 2. Security Architectures

As the enterprise evolves by leveraging new technologies such as bring your own device (BYOD) and the cloud, security architecture needs to be redefined to remain effective. Many services are moving out to the network edge and beyond. There are security issues that must be considered, as often these are tied to internal systems. These significant changes to the traditional network and security architecture results in the need to go back to the blueprints and develop an agile architecture. Understanding the complex data interactions in the enterprise by developing trust models is a requisite exercise, and will be explained in detail in this chapter.

We will cover the following topics in this chapter:

  • The evolution of networks and why the security architecture must change

  • Introduction of the data-centric security architecture

  • Developing trust models and mapping data interaction

  • Considerations for developing trust models for BYOD initiatives

Redefining the network edge

The enterprise network edge has been an evolving infrastructure, as many applications have become web-enabled in addition to the increasing demand for enterprise data from business partners and other third parties. The requirement for access to enterprise data is being driven by the need for the enterprise to outsource portions of their provided services, an example being the calculation of shipping costs for an e-commerce transaction. Traditionally, the sources of enterprise data may have resided in the internal trusted segments of the network, but this is changing with new opportunities provided by cloud-based offerings and collapsed virtualized DMZ implementations.

A newer internal network trend is a "trust no one " model, where the internal data systems are firewalled and protected at the same level as a typical DMZ implementation. In order for the internally secure zone to maintain restrictive access policies, a virtualization technology may be implemented...

Security architecture models

The typical security architectures range from a generic layered approach, where only connected layers may communicate with each other, to complex source and destination zones, allowed protocols, and specific communication channels permitted per endpoint type to advanced models based on data risk. Data risk is comprised of understanding what data needs protection including from whom and what, based on loss probability.

The data-centric security architectures emphasize enterprise data, where it is stored, how it is transmitted, and the details of any data interaction. Once all pertinent enterprise data and associated systems are identified, the required security mechanisms can be designed and implemented. Placement of the systems may not be a concern if the security mechanisms are based on the risk profile built by the previously learned information. The next sections will cover how the components of the security architecture are developed.

Defining the building...

Summary

In this chapter, we presented the idea of building a trust model constructed from building blocks of information. Once the trust model is built and enterprise risk has been assessed, the model can be applied to various types of data and data interactions. Agility in security can be achieved if data is the center of the analysis, providing determination of the required security mechanisms to reduce risk and support business initiatives. The next chapter will cover security as a process, supporting the developed security architecture.

Description

Enterprise security redefined using a data-centric approach and trust models to transform information security into a business enablement process. It is a unique and forward thinking approach for deciding the best method to secure data in the enterprise, the cloud, and in BYOD environments."Enterprise Security: A Data-Centric Approach to Securing the Enterprise" will guide you through redefining your security architecture to be more affective and turn information security into a business enablement process rather than a roadblock. This book will provide you with the areas where security must focus to ensure end-to-end security throughout the enterprise-supporting enterprise initiatives such as cloud and BYOD. "Enterprise Security: A Data-Centric Approach to Securing the Enterprise" will first introduce the reader to a new security architecture model and then explores the must have security methods and new tools that can used to secure the enterprise. This book will take a data-centric approach to securing the enterprise through the concept of Trust Models and building a layered security implementation focused on data. This is not your traditional security book focused on point solutions and the network aspect of security. This book combines best practice methods with new methods to approach enterprise security and how to remain agile as the enterprise demands more access to data from traditionally untrusted assets, hosted solutions, and third parties. Applied Information Security - A Data-Centric Approach to Securing the Enterprise will provide the reader an easy-to-follow flow from architecture to implementation, diagrams and recommended steps, and resources for further research and solution evaluation. This book is a reference and guide for all levels of enterprise security programs that have realized that non-data centric security is no longer practical and new methods must be used to secure the most critical assets in the enterprise.

Who is this book for?

This book is intended for the IT security staff beginner to expert but would also be a valuable resource for other IT functions such as IT compliance, IT operations, and executives responsible for managing IT and information security. Understanding the principles in this book is important for decision makers as new business models are developed and enterprise security must keep up to reduce risk and secure critical enterprise assets and data.

Woody does a great job of detailing the necessary information for creating a secured enterprise architecture. The book is easy to read but has a lot of information packed into those pages. I would recommend this book to those that work or want to work in Information Security as IT Risk Consultants or Architects. Definitely a good book for managers of those areas as well.

This one is probably one of the best books I've read recently. The topics are clearly explained. Does not explore in detail each security technology but is a good overview from an architecture prospective.
