Updating the Table of Contents and setting additional options

Now that you have built a Table of Contents, you need to be able to update it as the content changes in your document with the addition of new content and removal of old content. In addition, you might want to use More Options, which is available within the Table of Contents panel, to do things such as include hidden content in your Table of Contents.

In this section, we will look at updating your Table of Contents to reflect changes within the content. In addition, we will use the options that appear when you select More Options, including sorting entries alphabetically rather than in order of appearance, including hidden text frames within the generated Table of Contents, and using a feature called Run-in to force items of the same level to follow on immediately after each other.

Getting ready

To complete this recipe, open InDesign on your system and create a new document with 12 pages, as shown in the Creating...
