Metadata management defined

Before we get into the details, I find it important to align on basic definitions. In my experience, data professionals sometimes skip basic definitions in an attempt not to insult the audience when launching data capabilities. However, starting with grounding definitions can be done with grace in a way that does not insult the business leader and still grounds the audience on what we will accomplish.

I like to start with a simple slide with the title “Before we begin.” This simple yet impactful grounding slide can be set up with a basic premise and with the following verbal statement: “Before we dig into the details, I want to spend just a moment ensuring we all have the same common understanding of what it is we are going to discuss today. I, for one, have not been a metadata expert all my life, and thus, let’s take a moment to define what it is we mean when we talk about metadata today.” This simple yet non-offensive...
