Creating and editing labels
When you are creating labels for an easy-to-read final map, you should do the following:
- Establish one or more attribute fields for labeling
- Define the position of labels relative to the features its describes
- Define the position relative to other features or labels in order to minimize overlapping (for example, label weight ranking)
- Define the order of drawing labels on a map (for example, label priority ranking)
- Define the symbols for labels
- Create different label classes for the same feature class
- Avoid too many duplicate labels
- Add custom text to the labels if necessary
- Set a scale range (to control the display of the labels on the map) and work with the reference scale (to fix the size of the labels at a specific scale)
- Work with the Fast label quality (Labeling toolbar) to explore the preliminary results, and use the Best label quality for final labeling
