Respecting people

The concept of respecting people is a part of Lean principles that date back to Taiichi Ohno's work at Toyota. But the principles also found their way into the Agile Manifesto and virtually all Agile-based approaches to software development, including Scrum.

Respect doesn't imply that employees and team members get to slack off or accept low-quality work. There is accountability. But we always treat people the way we want to be treated. In other words, we follow the Golden Rule. Let's see how this principle applies to software development team members:

  • Work normal hours, eliminate overtime, and maintain a sustainable pace.
  • Help team members understand the value they provide to customers.
  • Build compensation and incentives plans around continuous learning and skills.
  • Challenge team members without belittling them.
  • Hold teams, not individuals, accountable to their commitments.
