Introducing and setting up Heptio's Velero

Velero is an open source backup solution for Kubernetes from Heptio. It offers many features that are only available in commercial products, including scheduling, backup hooks, and granular backup controls – all for no charge.

While Velero is free, it has a learning curve since it does not include an easy-to-use GUI like most commercial products. All operations in Velero are carried out using their command-line utility, an executable called velero. This single executable allows you to install the Velero server, create backups, check the status of backups, restore backups, and more. Since every operation for management can be done with one file, restoring a cluster's workloads becomes a very easy process. In this chapter, we will create a second KinD cluster and populate it with a backup from an existing cluster.

But before that, we need to take care of a few requirements.
