Mastering Microsoft Power BI – Second Edition

Preparing Data Sources

This chapter follows on from the dataset planning process described in Chapter 1, Planning BI Projects, by providing guidance on how to prepare for connecting to and transforming data using Power Query (M) queries. Power Query queries are written in a data transformation language commonly called “M” or can be generated via the Power Query Editor user interface. These queries access data sources and optionally apply data transformation logic to prep the tables for the Power BI data model.

As mentioned in Chapter 1, Planning BI Projects, to the greatest extent possible data transformation processes should be implemented within data sources such as Azure SQL and Azure Synapse SQL rather than via Power BI’s data transformation capabilities. The presence of significant data transformation logic (for example, joins, filters, and new columns) outside of an organization’s primary data warehouse or “source of truth” makes...

Query folding

Query folding is one of the most powerful and important capabilities of the M language as it translates M expressions into equivalent query statements for the given source system to process. With query folding, Power Query (M) serves as a rich abstraction layer for defining both simple and complex data transformation processes while still leveraging the compute resources of the source system. When implementing any remaining logic or data transformations via M functions, a top priority of the dataset designer is to ensure that these operations are folded to the data source.

In the following M query shown in Figure 2.1, a Table.RemoveColumns() M function is applied against the SQL view for the Internet Sales fact table to exclude three columns that are not needed for the dataset:

Graphical user interface, application Description automatically generated

Figure 2.1: Power Query Editor: View Native Query

The additional step is translated to a SQL query that simply doesn’t select the three columns. The specific SQL statement...

Query design per dataset mode

As mentioned in Chapter 1, Planning BI Projects, to the greatest extent possible data transformation processes should be implemented within data sources such as Azure SQL and Azure Synapse Analytics rather than via Power BI’s data transformation capabilities.

The presence of significant data transformation logic, such as joins, filters, and new columns, outside of an organization’s primary data warehouse or “source of truth” makes these solutions more difficult to understand and support. In addition, source systems are generally provisioned with more compute resources to handle data transformations and often include secondary data structures, like indexes, that speed up certain operations such as filters and joins.

If resource or time constraints make it necessary to apply data transformations in Power BI rather than source systems, Power Query (M) should generally be favored over DAX calculated columns and tables...

Data sources

Data source connectivity is one of the strengths of Power BI, due to the vast list of standard data source connectors included in Power BI Desktop. In addition, numerous industry standards such as Open Data Protocol (OData), Open Database Connectivity (ODBC), and Object Linking and Embedding Database (OLE DB) are supported. The breadth of data connectivity options is further bolstered by the ability for developers to create custom Power BI data connectors for a specific application, service, or data source.

Although a Power BI dataset can connect to multiple sources ranging from Azure Synapse Analytics to a text file, solution architects and developers should strive to build solutions on a single, well-supported source such as a data warehouse database system that already contains the necessary data integrations as well as reflects data integrity constraints and quality processes. Power BI datasets that connect to several distinct sources, and particularly to less...

Great resource for developers that have been assigned a PBI project, this book covers each concept in great detail for an end-to-end solution (From PBI desktop, to service, general security, RLS, Admin Center, DAX, M, etc). I was very impressed with this book as a lot of concepts covered in other books take the high level approach or refer you to Microsoft's documentation (which can sometimes be brief as well). Looking back to when I was studying to take the DA-100 (now PL-300), this book would have been a great resource as well!In summary - this is a one stop shop book! I highly recommend it and am very impressed!

Mastering Power BI, this book ended on my hands at the right time, I was contacted by our dear friend Valerie Connor and she asked me if I would like to review a Power BI book. I said: I would love to, actually, it is the time that I am reading lots of books related to Power BI because I am planning to go for the PL-300 certification. Then Vidhi Vashisth very kindly sent me a copy of this amazing book. This book is not for those starting their path on Power BI, it is for those with previous and solid knowledge of the Power BI environment, so if you are thinking to start your journey here let me tell you that this is not for beginners.I liked chapters 7, 8 and 9 dedicated to Data visualisations and formatting, applying advanced analytics, and dashboard designs. My data career has been linked to these topics when analysing data. I loved the part about ArcGis for Power BI, brought back a lot of memories of when I was involved in a mobile shop and live data collection project.DAX was a bit short, as my brother Ugochukwu Onyeka said, if you are looking to dive deep into DAX there are more books about DAXing including one from one of the writers of this book. Here you have a brief list of the things I refreshed from this book: - How to setup your environment and use Power BI Desktop to connect to SQL Server databases and get data (for your models) - I have been dealing with the AdventureWorks DB recently :) - How to design and implement master pages to manage page titles, column captions, and page navigation - How to design and implement workbooks to manage reports, reports page setup, report content, and page navigation - How to use dashboards to design and implement dashboards with multiple pages that display live data from the same model - How to establish and enforce security permissions on a Dashboard page, including user memberships - How to display reports in an interactive page with live data, including report filter and page navigation - How to use the Report Parts feature in the Power BI Desktop to create reusable content that you can package and reuse in reports on dashboards - How to get started with using the Power BI Service - How to use Power BI on the web - How to get started with published reports on mobile apps - How to implement and manage reports with data refreshes - How to publish a report to SharePoint and Teams. The chapter that was new and intriguing for me was Chapter 14, Administering Power BI for an Organisation. It got me thinking about the application of GDPR, local policies, and rules. I have not had the chance to apply this in real life yet.I am sure that you may release another edition because Power BI is being updated constantly.I enjoyed this book a lot and I will use it for my PL-300 exam preparation.Thank you, Val and Vidhi.

This is one of the best Power BI resources I have seen as of late. I own a lot of books on the Microsoft BI platform and I'm super-impressed with the great work that Greg and Brett have done. They are regarded as true experts and this book is a reflection of their terrific work in the Microsoft BI community. I don't give praise easily and quite honestly have been unimpressed with some early Packt titles but this book is a gem. This is a comprehensive end-to-end guide that promotes best-practices and shares a wealth of deep expertise from these two gentlemen. The writing is clear, articulate and the topical coverage is thorough. I highly recommend this book as a companion to DAX and Tabular Modeling books from SQLBI.

The book is both writing such a way that a beginner can understand it, as well as providing enough in depth details that a professional can delve deep into the technology behind Power BI.

I received an early release version of this book and after having purchased the first edition some time ago, I was keen to see what has changed and it became clear immediately that this book has moved with the times and been kept up to to date.Pros - up to date, excellent chapter on the Power BI gateway, great explanation on the questions we all ask regularly such as the difference between import and direct query, superb explanation of the different visualisations and what they all do.Cons - touches on M and DAX but if you want to learn how to utilise these (you will definitely need a grasp of DAX), you'd be better buying a book dedicated to these topics. All in all, this is the ultimate Power BI book and I can't recommend it highly enough.
